Here is Zacharias Moussaoui's new permanent address. It's Supermax, a.k.a. ADX Florence or the Alcatraz of the Rockies, which actually holds a Guiness World Record for Most Secure Prison. Moussaoui will be surrounded by some of the United States's most notorious criminals including Ted Kaczynski, Terry Nichols, Omar Abdel-Rahmen, Ramzi Yousef, Richard Reid, Matthew Hale, Robert Hanssen, David Lane, and Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso. Supermax was also the end of the line for Timothy McVeigh.

Google Maps did not have a high resolution shot of the area. The "permanent address" link is an image from Windows Live Local.

Here's Saddam's main Presidential Palace.
I believe this was Saddam's Official Residence.
Iraq's Unknown Soldier Monument.
Saddam International Airport.
The traffic circle in the center of this image is Firdos Square. That's where the famous statue of Saddam was pulled down. The big building to the northwest is the Palestine Hotel, where most of the press was (is?) staying. Just south of the Palestine is a building that used to be the Ishtar Sheridan. I'm not sure what it is today. There's a small mosque to the east of the square.

Like the images of Paris, there's no corresponding Google Map. Finding anything is a matter of finding another map and trying to figure out what you're looking at. There's a lot of interesting images here, but it's hard to figure out what some of this stuff is. This was identified on one map simply as "Clock Tower." I'm not sure what this is, but it's very near where the Iraqi Air Force Headquarters is supposed to be.

Sorry for the absence of posts here. I have been busy lately, working to get a new group blog, The Blue Voice, up and running.

I just recently discovered that Google Maps has opened up more of the world to their satellite coverage. They sometimes don't have corresponding maps with the images though, so it's hard to tell what you're looking at.

From Paris, here's the Arc D'Triomphe.

After reading and posting my Google Maps tour of the NL West (which also has links to my other posts of the other National League ballparks), the Liberal Avenger has invited me to post to this blog. I've been having a blast for a while playing around with Google Maps so it sounds like fun. I thought I'd start you out with a few views of the Happiest Place on Earth - Walt Disney World.

Here's the Magic Kingdom. Across the lagoon is the Ticket and Transportation Center and the Polynesian Hotel. The Walt Disney World Speedway is just south of the TTC parking lots. Here's the Contemporary Resort with the monorail going through it. Epcot sits at the junction of scans of differing resolution. The other two amusement parks, Disney-MGM Studios and Animal Kingdom are somewhere there in the poorer resolution scans. I haven't been able to find them.

This is Provincetown, Massachusetts - one of the coolest places in the country.

Provincetown is still a Portguese fishing village, however over the past 30 years it has become one of the world's hippest gay and lesbian communities. It is even home to my favorite restaurant in the whole world - The Lobster Pot smack-dab in the middle of everything on Commercial Street in the middle of town.

This is the Plymouth County Correctional Facility.

Charles Taylor, the evil leader of Liberia was imprisoned here (another building that no longer exists) and escaped in 1985.

This is where they put the Shoebomber after they arrested him at Logan Airport in Boston.

I don't think he is in Plymouth any longer. Good riddance!

Here is your challenge. It's a tough one:

Find an image(s) that by virtue of something that appears (or multiple things that appear) one can determine the DATE that the picture was taken.

An example of this would be in San Francisco where:

A crowd appears in Golden Gate Park for the annual "Strictly Bluegrass Festival."
The Castro Street Fair is clearly taking place.
The 49ers are playing.

Working with these events, one could determine the exact date the image was taken.

Is there anywhere else that this can be done? If so, where and how?

Solid State, formerly La Luna

Site of many, many shows in the early to middle 90's; at one time I was going 2-3 times a week. Hazel, Heatmiser (Elliot Smith's first band), Big Daddy Meat Straw...and the Dandy Warhols.

I don't think I was at the very first Dandys show, but it was close. And it's not like we're talking Sex Pistols Manchester 1976, but there was something special about those days - and it wasn't just Zia taking her shirt off during every show (does she still do that?)

The next few months were spent seeing them at every opportunity, tracing handstamps with sharpies to try to get into over 21 shows around town. That first show may not have been my best memory of La Luna, but it's one of the most lasting.

Eastern State Penitentiary in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia, PA. Al Capone stayed here for a while, but now it's inhabited almost solely by cats. My mom's house is also in the picture so be sure to wave hello, she'll appreciate it.

Mothballed Naval Ships

This is the collection of mothballed U.S. Navy ships at the mothballed Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard. If I recall correctly, I beleive the Iwo Jima, made famous by the movie Apollo 13 is stored here. Be sure to zoom in a little.

Bartlett Lake, Arizona. This one is just outside Phoenix and is one of those man made lakes in a mountain valley where you if you look down you can see dead trees and roads. Nice spot for Jet Skis. Zoom in to see some boats.
